Saint Andrew’s School seeks a talented Chief Financial Officer to oversee and manage the financial, risk management and legal affairs of the School, and to provide leadership to assigned functional areas. Functional oversight includes Finance and Accounting, Information Technology, Human Resources, Dining Services, Security, Auxiliary Operations and Facilities Management. The CFO provides primary support to the Board of Trustees Executive Committee, Asset Management Committee, Audit Committee and Investment Committee. Prepare monthly agendas and related information for Asset Management Committee, Audit and Investment Committee meetings. The CFO also serves in a leadership capacity for the School as a member of the Head of School’s Senior Leadership team, and various faculty and staff committees. Responsibilities & Essential Duties

Financial Operations

  • Oversees the creation, administration, and reporting of the operating, capital and FTE budgets to the Head of School and the Trustees.
  • Oversees immediate and long-term financial planning, analysis, operation, and compliance.
  • Monitors and reports on the investment of the School endowment funds.
  • Consults and works with the Head of School and Trustees on various financial and legal issues.
  • In collaboration with the Head of School, approves department’s human and financial resource needs.
  • Development and reporting of the capital budget recommendations and variances.
  • Makes day-to-day and long-term financial decisions.
  • Responsible for cash planning and management.

Risk Management and Legal Affairs

  • Oversees the institutional risk management process, reporting and mitigation structures, including development community education surrounding risk and coordination of insurance requirements.
  • Provides overall guidance and interface for institutional legal affairs, including coordination of legal counsel process and interaction.
  • Assures compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations and statutes.

Functional Area Leadership

  • Defines and implements the appropriate organizational structure for the assigned functional areas of finance/accounting, human resources, information technology, dining services, security, facilities management, and auxiliary operations.
  • Provides clear leadership, policy development, direction and support for assigned employees and operational areas.
  • Supports and ensures development of a strong underlying internal control environment in all of the school’s operational processes and enterprise resource systems.
  • Fosters a culture of service, professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and compassion.

Planning and Communication

  • Works closely with the Head of School and Director of Facilities Management to plan, evaluate, assign, and adjust resource needs to support institutional initiatives and priorities.
  • Collaborates closely with the Head of School’s senior leadership team members and other institutional leaders to understand and develop resource needs to support the School’s mission and the Head of School’s vision.
  • Works closely with the Director of Institutional Advancement on strategies and approach to financial initiatives including regular evaluation and reporting of the Advancement office productivity and goals.
  • Engages with departments across campus to understand and support the mission of the school. Supports the Head of School in the communication and presentation of financial issues.
  • Works with colleagues to identify areas in which greater coordination or collaboration can improve the quality or cost-effectiveness of operations, services or administrative support.

Qualifications

  • A high level of integrity in all matters.
  • At least ten years work experience in the leadership and supervision of a complex organization required, including involvement and supervision of financial, risk management, and legal functions.
  • A Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree both in finance, accounting or business required.
  • The ability to work successfully with members of the community, including faculty, staff and administrative leaders, as well as the Board of Trustees, alumni, parents, and local officials.
  • A collaborative and strategic leadership style.
  • The ability to serve as a critical business thinker, capable of providing positive and proactive solutions to business issues.
  • A track record of effective leadership.

Ethan Shapiro

Head of School

Beginning July 1, 2017, Ethan Shapiro took the helm as the school’s new interim Head of School. Mr. Shapiro came to Saint Andrew’s from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he has served in various leadership and teaching positions for almost 30 years. His lifelong commitment to learning and education, combined with his passion, energy, and proven success as both an administrator and an educator, provides our school and our students with the strategic leadership required for growth, development, and long-term success. Following a comprehensive national search in 2018, by Saint Andrew’s School Board of Trustees, Mr. Shapiro was appointed Head of School.

Mr. Shapiro served as Exeter’s dean of faculty. In this role, he was responsible for fulfilling the academic mission of the school and ensuring the highest performance of its 180 faculty members. Prior to that, he was Exeter’s director of summer school, a position which he held for eight years. In addition to overseeing all aspects of the nation’s largest five-week summer enrichment program, he established best practices for the program’s faculty and staff in the areas of risk management, training, and student safety. He also served as Exeter’s dean of students for six years, during which time he created a centralized compliance team, coordinated appropriate training for all faculty, created a health and wellness council and educated students on standards and expectations related to conduct and ethics.

A Russian language and history scholar with a bachelor’s degree from Colby College and master’s degree from Middlebury College, Mr. Shapiro, in addition to his leadership roles at Exeter, continued to teach in the classroom on a regular basis since joining the school’s faculty in 1988. He also coached the very successful Exeter varsity wrestling team for 27 years.

Campus Projects and Plans

Over the last 15 years, more than $30 million in new plant construction and renovation projects have been completed. The capital projects include a new Welcome Center, Stoops Family Gymnasium on the Middle School Campus, Shapiro Family Adventure Gymnasium featuring a rock climbing wall and dance studio, a track and field facility, Moabery Early Years Learning Center, Andrews Hall – The Center for Performing Arts, Malnik Family Athletic Center, and Schmidt Family Science Center. The School has also constructed a new Headmaster residence and erected a new Chickee Chapel, a symbol of the school’s heritage. In 2012, Saint Andrew’s embarked on a new campus master plan. The inaugural project under this exciting plan is the Dr. Albert Cohen Family Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. This innovative facility is scheduled to open for the 2017-­2018 academic year.
